Vinita Shekar

RCS England Director for Scotland, SAS surgeon in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), Ninewells Hospital, Dundee

Vinita Shekar is a specialty doctor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School in Dundee. Although she spent over 15 years working in London and Portsmouth, she has been based in Scotland for more than a decade. During this time, she has furthered her education by obtaining an LLM in Legal Aspects of Medical Practice, a PG Cert in Medical Education for Surgeons, and a PG Cert in Conscious Sedation.

Dr. Shekar has held a wide range of leadership and advocacy roles, including Clinical Audit Lead, Clinical Governance Lead, Investigating Officer for doctors in difficulty, Whistleblowing Advocate, SAS Representative on the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and Officer of the Local Negotiating Committee. She has served the College for over six years, initially as a member, then as Chair of the SAS Forum, and later as an invited member of the College Council. She was part of the panel for the Kennedy Review, after which she became the Council Lead for the SAS Strategy, successfully launched on 4 July 2023. This strategy has been widely recognised as exemplary.

Her various roles within the College and beyond have given her deep insight into educational forums and their stakeholders. She is proud to be the first SAS surgeon appointed as a Regional Director and looks forward to the opportunities ahead. Her aim is to introduce new initiatives in Scotland that foster stronger engagement, not only with members and fellows, but also with grassroots organisations and international graduates.
