The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI)

The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) is the statutory organisation representing general surgeons across the UK and Ireland. Founded in 1920, it has a long-standing commitment to advancing the science and art of surgery while fostering professional friendship among surgeons; principles that continue to guide the Association today. The ASGBI provides leadership in both general and emergency surgery, drawing on expertise from affiliated sub-specialist organisations that together reflect the breadth of modern general surgery.

ASGBI’s growing membership represents surgeons and surgical professionals at every stage of their career, from medical students to senior consultants, all of whom contribute to and benefit from a strong, collaborative surgical community.  A key part of this is the Moynihan Academy, an official branch of ASGBI that brings together medical students, residents, post CCT fellows, SAS surgeons, and locally employed doctors. The Moynihan Academy promotes collaborative learning, research, training, and networking for those interested in general surgery and trauma. With a strong emphasis on inclusivity, fairness, equal opportunity, and excellence, it plays a vital role in enhancing surgical training and supporting future surgeons in achieving their personal and professional goals.

The ASGBI International Surgical Congress, 12-14th May 2026 in Brighton, is the Association’s flagship annual event, showcasing the latest advances in surgical practice, research, and innovation. It provides a dynamic forum for knowledge exchange, skills development, and discussion of best practices. Reflecting ASGBI’s broader mission, the event strengthens the surgical community through shared learning, collaboration, and a commitment to improving outcomes for patients across the UK, Ireland, and beyond.
