Prof. Vincent J Gnanapragasam

Professor of Urology, University of Cambridge

Professor Vincent J Gnanapragasam is the first Professor in Urology at the University of Cambridge. His research spans basic science, translational research, clinical studies and epidemiology in prostate cancer. He has developed novel prognostic prediction models for both group‑stratified cohorts (the Cambridge Prognostic Groups) and individualised management (Predict Prostate), both of which are now integrated into routine clinical practice.

In 2021, the Cambridge Prognostic Groups were adopted by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NG131), and Predict Prostate is the only decision aid endorsed by the UK NICE national guidelines. He pioneered risk‑stratified management for active surveillance (STRATCANS) and established one of the first dedicated early prostate cancer clinics in the UK.

He has developed and led multiple multicentre trials, including the TAPS01 and TAPS02 IMP trials, and the NIHR i4i‑funded CamPROBE study, based on his low‑cost transperineal prostate biopsy device. He is Chief Investigator of the DIAMOND study, which holds more than 2,000 biosamples, tissue and annotated clinical data for biomarker discovery in urological diseases. He holds patents and CE marks, and has received numerous research awards, including a Hunterian Professorship and recognition from the University of Cambridge
