
Prof. Andrew Beggs
Professor - Cancer Genetics and Surgery, University of Birmingham
Professor Andrew Beggs is a Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where he specialises in laparoscopic (keyhole) cancer surgery and familial cancer syndromes. He also serves as an honorary consultant surgeon at Birmingham Children's and Women's Hospitals.
He is a Professor of Cancer Genetics & Surgery at the University of Birmingham's Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences, focusing his major research on solid tumour cancer biology and translational medicine. His leadership roles include Deputy Director of the Birmingham Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre and Head of Somatic Cancer in the Central and South Genomic Medicine Service Alliance. He also co-leads the Translational Biology and Genetics research theme and is the Theme Lead for Biomarkers and Liquid Biopsy.
Professor Beggs’ laboratory is supported by funding from the MRC, Cancer Research UK, and industrial partners. His work in organoid models, cancer biology, and omics technologies has led to intellectual property in advanced method development, including long read sequencing of the Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) complex.
A fellow of the Alan Turing Institute and an MRC Senior Clinical Fellow, he has an extensive publication record in leading journals like Nature, The Lancet, and Nature Genetics. Additionally, he was a scientific adviser to the DSHC on COVID-19 diagnostics during the pandemic and is the Chief Clinician of the LFD Digital Read programme.
