Professor Kiran Patel

Group Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Chief Executive, Consultant Cardiologist, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Professor Kiran Patel is the Group Chief Medical Officer, Deputy CEO, and Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Prior to this, he served as Chief Medical Officer and Deputy CEO at University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire, and as Medical Director for NHS England (West Midlands). He is an Honorary Professor at Warwick and Coventry Universities.

As a senior NHS Leader, he has managed significant transformational change, holding key roles in policy and strategy for over two decades. He has advised the Department of Health, NICE, and the Royal Colleges. He is currently advising the Indonesian government on health system strengthening.

In the voluntary sector, he founded and Chairs the South Asian Health Foundation charity and mentors students from deprived communities through the Social Mobility Foundation. He has published extensively on cardiology, social determinants, and healthcare systems.

Professor Patel famously prescribed the world's first COVID-19 vaccine outside of a clinical trial on December 8, 2020. In his spare time, he is a dedicated West Bromwich Albion FC season ticket holder and half-marathon runner.
