British Orthopaedic Association (BOA)

The British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) is the surgical specialty association for trauma and orthopaedic surgery in the UK, representing a community of around 5,000 members dedicated to advancing musculoskeletal health and patient care.

The BOA’s vision, as set out in its Strategic Plan 2025–2029, is “Relieving pain, restoring function, transforming lives.” This encapsulates the transformative impact of trauma and orthopaedics — restoring mobility, independence, and quality of life to people of all ages.

Guided by its strategy “One Profession: One Voice,” the BOA focuses on four strategic priorities:

  • Driving excellence in care through high clinical standards, equity of access, and sustainable service delivery.
  • Developing the profession by supporting surgeons at all stages, strengthening education and training, and promoting inclusion and wellbeing.
  • Speaking up for trauma and orthopaedics, ensuring the specialty is recognised and championed within national health policy and planning.
  • Championing research and innovation, supporting the responsible adoption of new technologies such as robotics and AI to enhance patient outcomes.

Working collaboratively with trauma and orthopaedic Specialist Societies, professional bodies, the NHS, and patient organisations, the BOA provides leadership, advocacy, and a strong professional network for the orthopaedic community.

Through education, standards, and representation, the BOA continues to uphold its commitment to improving patient care and supporting the profession — bringing together expertise and experience to shape the future of trauma and orthopaedics in the UK and beyond.
