Andrew Carr

Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Fellow of Worcester College, University of Oxford

Professor Carr holds the Nuffield Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford and is a fellow of Worcester College, Oxford. He is an honorary consultant surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

His research focuses on improving outcomes for patients undergoing surgery through innovation and high‑quality evidence from multicentre randomised clinical trials. In 2002 he founded, and later directed, the Botnar Research Institute at the University of Oxford, which focuses on medical engineering and clinical trials. His research contributions include establishing the role of partial knee replacement (the Oxford Knee), developing a range of patient‑reported outcome measures (the Oxford Scores), and inventing medical engineering nanofibre implants for use in surgery. He is one of the top 20 most cited surgical researchers globally.

He was awarded an MBE in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours for services to orthopaedic research and training. He was elected a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2009, is an NIHR senior investigator and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Copenhagen. He is a council member and trustee of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and deputy chair and trustee of the University of Bristol.
