Amr Mohsen

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, University of Hull Teaching Hospital, Chair, Intercollegiate Committee for Basic Surgical Examinations (ICBSE)

I am a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon whose practice now focuses on knee arthroplasty and hand surgery. Earlier in my career I covered the breadth of trauma, spinal surgery, arthroplasty, and hand surgery. My aim is to deliver safe, effective orthopaedic care through education and innovation.

Alongside clinical work, I have led multidisciplinary research programmes that secured competitive funding and produced a substantial body of peer-reviewed outputs, awards, and granted patents. Highlights include computer-assisted surgery, virtual reality arthroscopy simulation, spinal modelling, periprosthetic fracture fixation, robotic osteotomy, mobility aids, and outcome measurement—projects designed to improve surgical precision and patient recovery.

I serve as Chair of the Intercollegiate Committee for Basic Surgical Examinations (ICBSE), overseeing the MRCS and MRCS (ENT) on behalf of the four Surgical Royal Colleges in the UK and Ireland. The ICBSE is responsible for the operation, regulation, quality assurance, and development of these examinations in line with GMC standards, and for delivering the committee’s strategy.

For many years I have contributed as an examiner and assessor across membership and fellowship assessments, with roles in quality assurance, question writing, and intercollegiate governance.

My leadership experience spans clinical services, education, governance, research, and ethics. I have served as a Medical Director and, subsequently, interim Chief Medical Officer for a large NHS trust, leading organisational change and holding budgetary accountability while prioritising patient safety, staff experience, and collaborative improvement.
