Prof. Thomas Pinkney is a Chair of Surgical Trials at the University of Birmingham, UK and Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham.
Tom is the Director of Clinical Research at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and an NIHR Senior Investigator. He is Director of the Birmingham Surgical Trials Consortium (BiSTC) and the Birmingham Centre for Observational and Prospective Studies (BiCOPS). He also Chairs the research committee of the European Society of Coloproctology [ESCP] and the Multidisciplinary Clinical Committee of the Association of Coloproctology [ACPGBI].
Tom’s research interests are predominantly in clinical and translational research in inflammatory bowel disease and surgical site infection. As a founding member of the West Midlands Research Collaborative, he maintains an interest in development of trainee-led clinical trials in surgery.
He has extensive clinical research experience and is currently Chief Investigator of five NIHR-funded trials, including the £10.26M ROSSINI-Platform trial which is exploring the reduction of Surgical Site Infection across six surgical specialities.
He has authored over 250 papers in peer-reviewed journals, with an h-index of 55. His total research grant funding as lead or co- investigator is approximately £103.7M.
