
Professor Christina Fleming
Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon, University Hospital Limerick
Christina Fleming is a consultant general and colorectal surgeon at the University of Limerick Hospital Group and an adjunct associate professor at the School of Medicine, University of Limerick. She completed surgical training in Ireland, including a PhD in colorectal cancer, followed by an ESCP fellowship in robotic colorectal surgery and advanced pelvic malignancy at the University of Bordeaux, supported by an RCSI PROGRESS Fellowship.
An early adopter of robotic surgery, Christina has extensive experience in improving access to robotic services and developing sustainable training models that prepare the future workforce for new technologies. She has published widely on robotic surgery training and outcomes‑based research in robotic colorectal surgery. She has contributed to several expert groups and guideline developments, and in 2024 delivered the 47th Millin Lecture, Future‑Proofing Surgical Training – A Template for New Technologies.
Christina is the general surgery lead on the RCSI National Robotic Surgery Leads group, which works with educators and industry to set standards for robotic surgery and align it with current surgical training. The group has developed Ireland’s first national governance guideline for robotic surgery (2024) and a national curriculum for robotic surgery training (2025).
