Professor Jane Blazeby
Professor of Surgery and Honorary Consultant Upper GI Surgeon, University of Bristol
Professor Jane Blazeby FMedSci is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Bristol and an Honorary Consultant Surgeon at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.
Her MD research, funded by a personal National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) fellowship, focused on developing patient reported outcome measures (PROMs). This began her extensive interest in patient-centred surgical care and standards of surgery. She developed an international portfolio of PROMs with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), which are widely used in clinical trials.
Professor Blazeby established and continues to lead the RCS England Surgical Trials Centre in Bristol, aligning with the College's Trials initiative. This work has driven a culture change, helping the UK become world-leading in randomised surgical trial design and conduct.
Her current focus includes early phase research and innovation. She co-leads the Surgical and Orthopaedic Innovation theme in the Bristol Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and leads the newly formed NIHR Surgery and Peri-Operative Care Translational Research Collaboration (TRC).
